Life Programs, Grants, and Scholarships

We are proud of the quality of education received by students in the Lewiston Public Schools, and recognize that this quality is the result of hard work by teachers and support personnel.

One concrete way to support classroom teachers is through Impact Grants. Grant requests are reviewed and selected through a competitive process. Top ranked applications are selected and recipients are announced in the spring for awards which may be spent in the following July-June fiscal year.

LIFE also administers several recognition programs for staff. Nominations for the Baskin Award are due in February and announced in March. Teacher of the Year nominations are due in June, and are announced in August; ESP of the Year nominations are due in March and are announced in May.

Grants

Impact Grants are awarded each year to staff within the Lewiston School District to benefit and support students and staff by providing funds for innovative educational opportunities. Any Lewiston School District staff member can complete an application for a project that benefits Lewiston students or schools. Once a year in the spring, the LIFE board reviews applications, and awards are granted based on the proposed projects and funds available for that year. Grants are awarded for the following school year.

All proposed innovative projects must meet one or more of the following objectives:

  • Enhance student achievement and talents
  • Motivate students
  • Expand educational opportunities
  • Promote innovation
  • Team teaching or interdisciplinary projects

Previous Impact Grants awarded include:

  • Literature books and Library Projects
  • Science Projects
  • Care closets
  • Book Nooks
  • Musical Instruments
  • Math and Literacy Centers
  • De-escalation Kits
  • Alternative Seating Choices
  • STEM expansions
  • Safe Zone areas for self-regulation
  • Pens and Pencil Kits
  • Dual credit scholarship program
  • Book Exchange Cart
  • Classroom technology

Scholarships

LIFE currently administers around 30 Endowed Scholarships and 20 non-endowed scholarships each year.

In addition to the privately funded scholarships, The LIFE Board of Directors has created two scholarships awarded to Lewiston students who will be furthering their education. These include The LIFE 21st Century Scholarship, awarded to a graduating senior with high character traits, and The LIFE Science Scholarship, awarded to a senior interested in science and pursuing a science or engineering degree. We also award the LHS Alumni Scholarship once a year, created by the LIFE Board.

River Trips

Every year about 380 LEWISTON 4TH GRADERS TAKE JET BOAT TOURS UP HELLS CANYON.

The students take this field trip upriver with local outfitters “Snake River Adventures” to learn about wildlife, geology, history and the importance of the river. In total, Snake River Adventure crews embarked on 15 tours with all the students.

The LIFE board has accepted the challenge to raise the funds needed in conjuction with efforts by the students and their teachers to take this amazing experience.  Many generations of Lewistonians remember this trip fondly and it has greatly influenced many young scientists, explorers and historians.

Please help us continue the tradition and DONATE to the annual 4th Grade River Trips.
